Duwamish Alive Coalition continues to nurture and expand tree canopy within our local communities which suffer the effects of pollution and heat domes.\nThe Duwamish River ecosystem supports 5 salmon species including the threatened Chinook salmon which is a critical food source for our Southern Resident Orcas; along with wildlife that includes river otters\, beavers\, bald eagles\, and blue herons. Volunteers have steward this area creating habitat which supports these young fish on their journey to Puget Sound.  Volunteers will be removing invasive plants and replacing them with native plants.  This lovely small park is tucked away amongst the river’s maritime industries along the river. \nDuwamish Greenbelt at Pigeon Pt \, Seattle   Delridge Neighborhood Development  Association   \nUpland forests are important part of the river’s ecosystem\, providing many benefits to the watershed and communities.  This part of the Greenbelt is also used as an outdoor classroom for local schools.  Volunteers will be planting native plants\, removing invasive plants and mulching. \nhəʔapus Village Park and Shoreline Habitat\, Seattle    Port of Seattle & DIRT Corps \nThis is a sacred site of the Duwamish Tribe\, being an ancestral location of one of the tribe’s Longhouses and located across the street from the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center. This issue of environmental justice and equity came to a head in 2021\, when a heat dome killed more than 100 Washington residents.   \nThe City of Seattle and Washington DNR have each put an increased emphasis on urban forestry in recent years\, which is now coming to a head with One Seattle Tree and an agreement between DNR and American Forests to create the first statewide tree equity collaborative in the country. With a huge influx of funding from state and federal partners coming down the pike\, now is the time to showcase not only the work that’s been done by DNR\, Seattle\, and our partners (particularly along the Duwamish Greenbelt)\, but the need to do more.   \nHaving the event at Roxhill Park allows us to spotlight the Roxhill Bog\, the last of what were 26 peat bogs in Seattle. Why it matters\, what has been accomplished so far. \nThe second public meeting for the community led restoration of Roxhill Bog will be held online November 17th from 6:30 to 8:00pm\, to provide an update on the hydrology study of why the wetland has been drying out and possible solutions along with the results of the community survey that was conducted. \nRoxhill Bog is one of the last peat wetlands of the historical 26 within Seattle\, dating back 10\,000 years and home to a unique ecosystem of plants and animals.  It’s also the headwaters of Longfellow Creek and an important community asset where community members can experience and learn about nature.  Over the last couple decades\, it has been drying out which has significantly degraded its ecosystem – with increased invasive plants\, loss of wildlife and unsuitable usage of the area creating safety concerns.  As the peat dries\, it also degrades over time loosing its ability to absorb and filter water\, releasing its carbon into the atmosphere.   Hydrating the peat  will not only improve the wetland ecosystem but also help Longfellow Creek by providing filtered water with more even flows throughout the year\, reducing erosion. \nCommunity members\, alarmed about the loss of this community treasure\, created a collaborative partnership with the Delridge Neighborhood Development Association\, Duwamish Alive Coalition\, Roxhill Champions and American Rivers to help restore the bog wetland.  With help from Seattle Councilmember Lisa Herbold and King County Councilmember Joe McDermott the partnership was able to acquire funding for the hydrology and soil studies and the community studies\, community survey which received over 260 responses and restoration design. \nThe November 17th public meeting will review the results of the studies\, and community survey and seek input on the restoration design.  This is an important opportunity for the community to provide comments about the project and their hopes for the wetlands’ future.
