SUMMARY:Duwamish Substation with EarthCorps
DESCRIPTION:Duwamish Substation: South Seattle (Puget Sound Steward Led) \nABOUT THIS SITE:\nThe Duwamish Substation is one of many stations distributing energy to homes around the greater Seattle area. The land and water surrounding the substation provide critical food and shelter for a variety of animals living there. One animal that supports many of the other animals in our Puget Sound ecosystem are salmon. Salmon use the area to slowly transition between freshwater and saltwater. It’s is important that the nearby riverbank be lush with healthy native plants because they provide homes for the bugs that salmon like to eat and they filter polluted rainwater that runs off roads\, parking lots and roofs. By removing invasive species and planting natives\, we will be providing a more suitable habitat for salmon and the many other animals that live in the area. Please join us to help restore this habitat. \nTHE BASICS:\nEarthCorps supplies gloves\, tools\, water\, light refreshments and volunteer education. We will provide everything you need to know about tool use and safety\, forest health\, information on the park\, and the importance of the work you’ll be doing. No prior experience necessary\, just come ready to learn something new! \nFOR YOUR SAFETY AND COMFORT\, PLEASE BRING:\nClothing that can get dirty (because it will!)\nLong pants and a long sleeve shirt (helps protect against prickly plants)\nSturdy shoes that can handle some mud (closed toed shoes are required: work boots\, hiking boots\, or running shoes are all fine)\nSnacks\nFull water bottle\nEarthCorps runs our events rain or shine! Remember to check the weather and bring appropriate layers and raingear/sun wear if needed. \nWHAT WILL WE BE DOING?\nWhile the exact tasks at hand vary\, our projects focus on improving the forests and wetlands in our local cities. Healthy and thriving natural areas are vital to our community because they absorb and filter rain water\, absorb toxins in the air\, produce clean oxygen\, provide living spaces for wildlife\, and they create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. \nIn order to help create healthy forests and wetlands\, we focus on removing aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry)\, maintaining areas where these weeds have been removed\, and planting trees and shrubs during the rainy season. \nYOUTH:\nAll unaccompanied volunteers between the ages of 16 and 17 must bring a filled out Youth Waiver the day of the event. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nDriving Directions to Seattle City Light – Duwamish Substation on the Duwamish River\nW Marginal Place S\, Seattle\, WA \nFrom the North on I5:\nHeading South on I 5\, at exit 158\, take ramp right for Boeing Access Rd toward E Marginal Way.\nTurn right onto S Boeing Access Rd.\nTurn right onto E Marginal Way S.\nTurn left onto S 102nd St. and go over the bridge through Boeing Company parking lots.\nTurn right onto West Marginal Pl S.\nJust before the City Light power substation\, look for a small pull out on the right in front of a tall metal fence and park there. Look for EarthCorps event signs.\nFrom the South:\nFrom I-5 Northbound take exit 156 and merge onto Hwy 599 towards Tukwila/W. Marginal Way. Hwy 599 turns into Hwy 99.\nTake the W. Marginal Place S exit and turn left onto W. Marginal Pl. S.\nJust before the City Light power substation\, look for a small pull out on the right in front of a tall metal fence and park there.
